The blue backlit monitor has readout for time, speed, strokes, calories, and program. The computer stores data for up to four users, and also offers race programs as well as pacer and watts-dependent programs, and a recovery feature that works with an optional heart rate chest strap.

The 67-pound aluminum frame is lightweight enough to move without difficulty and the folding frame allows it to occupy just 16 x 24 inches of space when stored. Unfolded and ready to row, it measures 72 inches long, 18 inches wide, and 34 inches high at the top of the monitor.

Included with 12 preset programs are four Polar-compatible heart rate programs to help you achieve your fitness goals. The 16 levels of resistance are provided by a combination of air and magnetic resistance. You adjust the resistance with a touch of a button on the console. The rest of the specs include the solid steel fan and flywheel, an adjustable cooling air vent, large comfortable seat, pivoting heel supports on the foot plates, and a 300-lb user weight capacity.

What We Say about the R99 Rower

The Lifecore R99 rower is noisy when you’re rowing hard so don’t be fooled by claims that it is a silent rower. These types of combo rowers use the air resistance at lower levels and the quieter magnetic resistance at the upper levels of tension.

The lower priced R88 model is the same rower in mechanical specs and frame as this one, except that the Lifecore R99 has a plug-in power option and some preset programs; however, none of those features are worth spending the extra $200. At $899, the Lifecore R99 rowing machine gets a pass. We suggest you buy the R88 at $699, or go with the legendary Concept2 at $999, or the ProRower RX-850 water rower by H2O Fitness for $899.
